Project: Get four media outreach materials published

Key Skills: Writing skills, research skills and time management

I created an outreach strategy to create awareness about The Borgen Project. My plan included creating a variety of outreach materials such as letters to the editor and feature stories. I sent these materials to various journalists and media channels in the Salt Lake valley.

I have had three letter to the editors published in the print and online editions of the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune. I also created a feature story that was posted on Medium, a blogging platform for articles.

The Borgen Project: Fundraising

An advocate flyer I mailed to my family with a letter asking them to donate.

Employer: The Borgen Project

Project: Fundraise $500

Key Skills: Writing skills, communication with donors and time management

I raised over $800 as a part of my internship with The Borgen Project. I sent out letters to family and friends, and offered my services to reach my goal of $500. I also followed up with those who received letters to remind them to donate. The fundraiser was also promoted on my personal social media accounts as a way to reach a wider audience.

Through communicating with donors and creating strong written materials I was able to reach my fundraising goal. The money I have raised will go to help The Borgen Project continue their mission of reducing absolute poverty.

Bill’s Bear Carvings

Client: Bill’s Bear Carvings

Project: Create a brochure and a business card

Key Skills: Problem solving, visual communication and creativity

Programs: Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

I began my work with Bill’s Bear Carvings by creating a brochure of the various bears the crafter makes. I created the brochure in Adobe InDesign where I laid out the text and images. The biggest challenge was finding a way to present information in a way that is both visually appealing and informational. This was overcame by selecting quality photos and being critical with the information I included.

I have also designed a business card for the crafter. To create this I used Adobe Illustrator to replicate the brand with the pen tool and the graphic pen to make a “wooden” background. The text and images were brought together in InDesign. The client has been using these designs to promote his business and I plan on creating more for him in the future.

Peter Pan Book Jacket

Project: Modernize the Peter Pan book cover

Key skills: Visual communication, problem solving and creativity

Programs: Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

The goal of this project was to design a new book jacket for a published book. In modernizing the book cover of Peter Pan I was able to challenge my skills in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. The design went from fairly simple in the early designs to more complex in the final. This dramatic change in the ideas encouraged me to overcome new challenges and take more risks in my work.

I ended this project by printing the book jacket and used the measurement to correctly put it on the book. This design challenged me to take risks and be open to new ideas.
